YOGYAKARTA CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2009
This year's festival (2009) is the fifth, we programmed works mostly from composers that we knew personally, so that young Indonesian composers and performers can learn from them whether by direct contact or email. The young Indonesian performers found new techniques of how to explore their instruments along with musical interpretations, and for young composers, they gained deeper knowledge about musical style and form in addition to the ideological and aesthetic background of their works.
This is our main goal for Yogyakarta Contemporary Music Festival: to create a space for atonal, twelve-tone and total serialism, electro-acoustic and aleatoric compositional methods, along with the influences of ethnic musical styles. The intention of this openness is to inform the Yogyakarta musicians and audience as fully as possible about current ideas, theories, and concepts in the musical world especially in Asia. Besides building up the networking among the musicians, the festival intends to ensure the continuation of the YCMF spirit to learn, share and help in friendship. We hope that this infectious enthusiasm will generate out into all of Indonesia. To implement our dreams, it is not enough if the festival is only held three or four times. It should continue into the future.
The festival is organized by the Independent Composers Community Yogyakarta in cooperation with Asian Cultural Council, Lembaga Indonesia Prancis (French Cultural Centre) Yogyakarta, Cantus Music Centre Jakarta, Program Pasca Sarjana ISI Yogyakarta (Indonesia Institute of the Arts Post-Graduate Programme), as well as various cultural foundations, music lovers, and participators in culture.
